The annual ban on drumming and noisemaking by the traditional authorities in the Greater Accra has commenced.
The press release from the Greater Accra Regional Peace Council states that in connection with it a stakeholders’ meeting was held at the instance of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs on Monday 6th May, 2019, at Dodowa.
At the meeting were representation from the Greater Accra Regional Peace Council, security agencies in the region and some MMDCEs.
It came out during the meeting that the specific days for the observance were not uniform as they vary from one place to the other.
The ban has in the past been characterized by breaches of the public order as enforcers clash with churches and others over musical instrument seizure resulting in violence.
The Greater Accra Regional Peace Council has in this direction urged organizations and individuals to respect and observe the ban which stretches from Monday, 13th May to 13th June, 2019.
“In the same vein, we urge the traditional councils and the youth who enforce the ban not to take the law into their hands, rather they should employ peaceful means. The involvement of the Ghana Police and the security arrangements in the country is an option that Nii Mei an Naa Mei should choose instead of the use of force, which would not settle matters but rather inflame passions and threaten the peace in the region,” the regional chairman of the council Rt. Rev. Samuel K. Osabutey stated.
