Sanitation Problem: Distributing Dustbins A Misplaced Priority - Terlarbi To Sanitation Ministry

Member of Parliament [MP] for Lower Manya Constituency in the Eastern Region, Ebenezer Okletey Terlarbi says it is not a prudent move by government to embark on distributing 20,000 dustbins to various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies across the country in an effort to curbing sanitation.

According to him he believes government’s attention concerning sanitation issues in the country has been misplaced.

“Why should government be hailed for distributing dustbins in the name of making Accra and Ghana at large the cleanest place to be when the main problems of sanitation which the government is aware of has been ignored,” he lamented.

He said the focus of government at these crucial times that flooding is taking lives of citizens, destroying farms and displacing properties will not help in curbing sanitation issues in the country because the remains in river bodies during downpours are clear submissions of the things government should focus on.

The NDC MP reiterated that blocked and choked drains should be the main focus of government in preventing flooding problems in the country and not sharing of dustbins which cannot offer better relief than the constant desilting of gutters across the country and maintenance of our forest reserves.

On UTV’s ‘Adekye Nsroma’ panel discussion programme, Hon. Terlarbi advised the government not to focus on only benefits to be derived from destroying the Atiwa forest but listen to comments made by crusaders against the deforestation of the Atiwa forest.

“ . . The Atiwa forest which has been given out by this government for bauxite mining will generate much income when used as tourist attraction site than the current decision taken by government over it,” he stressed.
