"Stop Describing People Who Use Wood For Buildings As Poor"

The Provost of the College of Architecture at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Prof. Seth Obeng Asiamah, has advised that wooden structures and buildings should be maintained properly rather than razing them down as being advised by some people. According to him such buildings were a sign to us of our architectural history. He said what needed most was for us as a nation to have a maintenance culture, so as to prolong the life of such buildings. However, he said using wood in replacement of sand, clay and cement was very necessary due to the high cost and continuous rise of prices of cement For cost effectiveness, wood is better than cement, he stated. Speaking in an interview with Adom FM, he cited instances where institutions like the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and Achimota School all who have wooden structures that needed to be maintained. He made this remark after the Accra Ridge residence of ex-President Jerry John Rawlings and his family, was rocked on Valentines Day by loud explosions and a raging fire. He added that Ghanaians should desist from the habit of describing people who use wood for buildings as poor people.
