Works And Housing Minister Inspects Storm Drain Project In Nsawam/Adoagyiri

The Minister for Works and Housing Hon Samuel Atta Akyea has said the country will need about US 5.6 billion to tackle drainage challenges across the country.

According to the Minister, over the past years from the days of late President Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the country has not paid serious attention to tackling drainage challenges.

The Minister made these remarks at Nsawam/Adoagyiri when he inspected the storm drain project which commenced three weeks ago at the Nsawam Government Hospital Change Road aimed at addressing flooding in the area.

The project is being carried out by Promto Logistics. Similar drainage works will also be carried out at the Osae Djan School , Nsawam Methodist School and Nsawam Prisons all at an estimated cost of two million Ghana Cedis (Ghc 2000 000.00).

Hon Samuel Atta Akyea said the country needs to move from constructiom of open drains to covered drains to effectively deal with flooding.

He said the Nsawam storm drain project and others which are being carried out in various parts of the country, show the commitment of the government of President Akufo-Addo to tackle the country's drainage challenge.

The Minister said the approval by the World Bank of two hundred million US dollars on May 30,2019 for the dredging of the Odor-Circle drain will help improve the drainage system in the city.

He commended the contractor for the Nsawam Government Hospital Change Road storm drain project for a good job done so far.

The MP for Nsawam Adoagyiri Hon Frank Annoh-Dompreh commended the President Nana Akufo-Addo and the Minister for Works and Housing for ensuring the commencement of the project to address flooding in the areas where the drainage works are being carried out.

He said for about 30 years now the Nsawam Government Hospital Change Road drainage has been a major challenge to people in the area and described the project as a great relief to them.

The Project Engineer Mr George Yaw Sarpong said the Nsawam Government Hospital change road is a very important road which links the hospital from the southern part of Nsawam and covering a distance of about 420 meters.

He said the completion of the storm drain will stop flooding in the area and make the road motorable.

The Assembly man for Djankrom East Hon Kwabena Osafo Gyamfi described the project as good news to the people of Nsawam/Adoagyiri as residents in the area have been going through a lot of suffering during the rainy season.
