Tema-Mpakadan Railway Workers Strike Again

Workers building the 85 kilometre single gauge railway line from Tema to Mpakadan have demonstrated against their third party agencies over poor working conditions.

The third party agencies include GCL, Quick jobs, Open consults, Phijoeki and Unique services.

The workers, numbering over 100, on Monday morning halted production at the main AFCONS yard to register their displeasure.

They prevented in coming and out going vehicles of the company amidst chanting of war songs and display of placards.

Addressing the media, Mr. Godwin Kwame Soji, leader for the aggrieved workers, lamented that, the third party agencies were unlawfully deducting money from their already meager wages.

He added that, some of the workers were been victimised for no reason.

Mr.Soji explained that, their grievances had been sent to the appropriate authorities but nothing had been done.

Mr.Bernard Essomang, Bulldozer operator of AFCONS construction limited, said his contract was unlawfully terminated without the knowledge of his Indian supervisor.

According to him, the out sourcing or the third party agency idea should be scraped to stop the exploitation and near slavery conditions.

Efforts to get authorities to respond to the allegations were unsuccesful as police personnel stationed at the main entrance would not even allow journalists into the project office yard.

This is the third time the workers had demonstrated over what they claim is unfair and poor working conditions.
