MP For Nsawam/Adoagyiri Calls For Aggressive Efforts To Promote Use of Renewable Energy

The Member of Parliament for Nsawam/Adoagyiri and Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of Parliament, Frank Annoh-Dompreh has called for aggressive effort to promote the use of renewable energy in the country.

He made the comment in Parliament in a statement on "the future of renewable energy in Ghana".

He noted that Ghana like many African countries, has taken commendable steps in the area of renewable energy but said the country can do more to raise it's status for clean energy generation in the near future and cited the success achieved by Kenya in renewable energy generation to buttress his assertion.

"Investing in private sector participation in renewable energy supply will enable the majority who are household consumers to produce electricity for domestic use, in effect decreasing the pressure on national grid supply for a sustainable industrial growth," Hon Annoh-Dompreh said.

"There is the need to support and encourage Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and create a profitable and conducive environment for adopting renewable energy," he added.

According to him, the use of renewable energy will help reduce the cost of power supply to individual homes and Institutions.

The MP for Elembele and former Minister of Energy, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah called for serious implementation of the Renewable Energy Act 2011, Act 832 to enable the country derive the desired benefits from it.

Contributing to the statement, the MP for Evalue Ajomoro Gwira, Catherine Afeku said the future of renewable energy in the country is great and emphasized the need for increased sensitisation on the issue for the public to fully embrace renewable energy use.

The Member of Parliament for Binduri Hon Robert Baba Kugnab-Lem said the country ought to give more attention to areas where it has comparative advantage for instance solar energy, when exploring the use of renewable energy .
