Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS) in charge of operations, Kwaku Ohene Djan has noted that, his outfit expects a bumper harvest this year on their 500 acres of maize farm at Ejura.

He said this farming initiative is in line with government’s planting for food and jobs flagship programme.

According to Mr. Kwaku Ohene Djan in an interaction with the media expressed his excitement in the current state of affairs of the farm and thanked MOFA for their support. He was impressed with the exploit and commended volunteers for their hard work and dedication.

“As a youth-focused institution, we seek to strategically position ourselves to support the government flagship programme “planting for food and jobs”. We want to contribute to the food security of this country and I believe this is a step in the right direction. This year we are cultivating 500 acres maize at Ejura alone and judging from what I am seeing now, we expect nothing but bumper harvest. To this end, we will deploy more national service personnel and create jobs in our host community by employing more farm hands among the indigenes” he added.

Mr. Gyan assured the staff and volunteers of the Scheme’s support and commitment and added that the Scheme is working hard to promote agric entrepreneurship as a measure to mitigate graduate youth unemployment.

The farm manager Mr. Biimi Suuk took the delegation round the farms and briefed them on the progress of work so far. He used the opportunity to thank the Management for their swift response whenever there is a need for farm input and machinery to aid their work on the farm.

Mr. Mohammed Sulemana, the Municipal Director of MOFA in charge of Plant Protection and Regulatory Services assured the Scheme of the Agric ministry’s support considering their role in Ghana’s food security. He, however, advised the Scheme to plant on time as that is also a measure in ensuring good yield considering his experience with the rainfall pattern in the area.

National service personnel, volunteers and workers on the farm expressed their profound gratitude for the regular visit to the farm by Management and thanked them for the borehole.

He was accompanied by Mr. Opoku Mensah, the Ashanti Regional Director of NSS, Mr. Armstrong Esaah, the NSS Head of Corporate Affairs and Mr. Oxford Osei Bonsu, NSS Project Head to the farms in the Ejura Sekyedumase Municipality where they met with a team from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) who were also on a routine inspection at the farm.
