GNFS To Collaborate With VRA To Check Illegal Connections

The Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) is to collaborate with the Volta River Authority (VRA) to check illegal connections and unauthorized metres installation in the Sunyani Municipality.

Illegal electricity connections are rife in some parts of the Municipality, particularly Penkwase area, which is one of the biggest suburbs.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) Heroine Sekyere Boakye, the Regional Fire Commander disclosed in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Thursday in Sunyani.

She stated most of the domestic fires her outfit had attended to this year resulted from illegal connections and the use of unauthorized metres.

ACFO Boakye said between January and March this year, 329 cases of fire was recorded in the region but within the same period in 2018, it was 588 incidents.

She said bush and domestic fires were the highest cases of 107 and 96 respectively while commercial, 36, road crashes, 26, electricals, 12 and institutional, four.

ACFO Boakye urged the general public to be cautious about the use of gas at home to prevent fire outbreaks to save lives and properties.

She advised that victims of fire outbreaks must call the GNFS immediately to avert the spread of fire to other nearby buildings.

ACFO Boakye appealed to corporate institutions and charitable organizations to assist the Command to re-roof its appliance bay, which was ripped off by a heavy rainfall some months ago.
