Pregnancy Clubs to be formed in Gomoa West

Pregnancy clubs are to be formed in the Gomoa West District to educate pregnant women, especially the young ones, on how to take care of pregnancy. Nana Essel Botwey II, Queenmother of the Apam and initiator of the programme, said the measure was to reduce maternal deaths in the district. The Queenmother said this at the swearing in of Ogyeedom Ama Tsetsewa I, Mankrado of Gomoa Oguan and Osahen of Gomoa Akyempim Traditional Area at Gomoa Assin on Wednesday. Nana Botwey urged Queenmothers to embrace the programme and to ensure that the clubs were not only formed in their communities but were made functional. "With teenage pregnancy on the increase in our communities, we must take steps to ensure that they are well educated on management of pregnancy to facilitate safe delivery", she said. She said nurses could be invited from time to time to talk to the women on dos and don'ts in pregnancy. Nana Botwey cautioned that the clubs must not be made to replace the anti-natal clinics pregnant women were expected to attend. "Ours is to complement efforts of the nurses at anti-natal clinics", she said and added that through the club we can capture pregnant women who do not attend anti-natal clinics could be captured. Obrifo Ahunako Ahor Ankobea II, Omanhen of Gomoa Akyempim Traditional Area, appealed to chiefs to ensure that the clubs are formed in their areas and are well patronized.
