NPP Activist Handed 2 Weeks Remand Sentence...For "Criminal Accusation"

Reports reaching Peacefmonline.com say one the two New Patriotic Party (NPP) activists who were rounded up by security operatives drawn from the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), for alleged comments on Top Radio, an Accra based Radio stations Breakfast Show, that the Rawlingses, may have deliberately set their own Ridge residence on fire, has been remanded into prison custody for two weeks, until March 3rd. Nana Darkwa was charged with publishing information with the intention to cause fear or harm to the public or to disturb the public peace, under Section 208 of the Criminal code of 1960. The two were put before a Cocoa Affairs Court in Accra, a few minutes before 3pm, with His Lordship Justice C. A Wilson, presiding over proceedings. They were represented by Lawyers Kwame Akuffo and Mike Ocquaye Jnr. Some have described the courts ruling as an affront to free speech and fair comment on a matter of public concern. The Ex-Presidents spokesperson, Kofi Adams, who spoke to Peace news explained the circumstances leading to the arrest of the NPP sympathisers. According to him, Nana Darkwa was categorical and insistent that Mr. Rawlings committed arson and dared him (Kofi Adams), to challenge him for proof. "I followed up on the claim and reported the case to the police," he stated. Meanwhile, leading members of the NPP, marched to the Police Headquarters to seek explanation for Nanas detention. Simon Osei Prempeh, NPP MP for Nsuta Kwamang Beposo in the Ashanti Region, and Dan Botwe, MP for the Okere in the Eastern Region spoke to Peace Fms Yaw Obeng Manu who was the scene of the protest march.
