Mr Mike Hammah, the Minister of Transport, has commended Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, Eastern Region Minister, for his involvement and interventions that has led to a reduction in accident rates in the Eastern Region. Investigations conducted by the Daily Searchlight reveal that the Hon. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo has been at the forefront of numerous road safety initiatives that led to major gains in the Eastern region during the last Christmas, where a minimal region during the last Christmas, where a minimal number of accidents were recorded. Enquiries conducted in the Eastern region reveal that Mr. Ofosu Ampofo, as chairman of Regional Road Safety Committee, personally took a great interest in several initiatives taken by the National Road Safety Commission to ensure an accident free Christmas, particularly in the Eastern region. Among these initiatives was a massive and sustained education of the public, conducted through radio and at the personal level in various institutions like schools and mosques, direct interactions with various driver unions across the region, and drafting the police to clamp down hard on over-speeding within the region. Interestingly, last year marked the 10th anniversary of the formation of the National Road Safety Commission, and as part of the programs to mark the anniversary; there were lots of education programs in churches, radio, and television. Again, all the stakeholder institutions such as the police, the Department of Feeder Roads, the Driver, Vehicle & Licensing Authority, the Red Cross and other such institutions were mobilized to ensure a safe and bloodless Christmas, and in all these, Mr. Ofosu Ampofo played a key role as the driving force. Indeed, according to officials of the National Road Safety Commission, the Eastern region is the only region where drivers are being trained to save lives after accidents, since the management of accident victims after accidents is crucial to saving their lives. The Daily Searchlight would like to use this opportunity to highly commend Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo for the sterling performance he has put out in saving lives on our roads, with the wish that other regional and district managers would adopt his methods. Indeed, accidents on our road contribute significantly in making this nation poorer, and any effort to reduce them must be deeply appreciated! Once again we commend Mr. Ofosu Ampofo!
