The Unity Hall of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has with immediate effect stripped the Minister of Education, Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, and Vice Chancellor Kwasi Obiri Danso of their alumni status.

The Hall’s alumni association has also blamed the high court judge who dismissed its injunction to make the conversion of the all-male hall into a mixed hall take effect for the crisis on campus. At an emergency meeting held on Sunday, September 8, alumni of the hall, popularly known as Continentals, said they will embark on a campaign to end the political career of Dr Opoku-Prempeh, who is also the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South Constituency.

The meeting was held to deliberate on a purported letter written by the Minister directing the University Council to uphold a decision to make Unity Hall and Africa Hall mixed halls while stopping University Hall, popularly known as Katanga Hall, from being converted.

“We have argued time and again that Unity Hall was expressly established by a regulation in 1968 as an ‘all-male’ hall and so is in a league of its own,” a press release on Monday said. “And that any attempt to change its nature by an administrative officer would be fiercely resisted. Only Africa Hall is the hall in the same league with Unity as expressly established.” The alumni were, therefore, disgruntled by the Minister’s directive and therefore declared him persona non grata. They pronounced same on Professor Obiri Danso, whom they claimed started all this.

“And by this, the Old Continentals Association would forever resist any attempt by these two ungrateful and betrayals of Unity Hall to lay claim of affiliation to Unity Hall for any gain whatsoever, be it moral or any such goodwill that stands in Unity Hall’s glorious name.

“And not even their future generations would be allowed to make such claim, as their cut off from Unity Hall would be made public for posterity to know.” They juxtaposed the position of the two alumni to what former president John Dramani Mahama, Supreme Court Justice Anin Yeboah, Nana Akuoko Sarpong and others did when attempts were made to convert Commonwealth Hall into a mixed hall.

They claim they are not backing down on the legal fight to stop the conversion and are just waiting for a verdict from the Chancellor, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
