Workers of ECG Still At Post - Deputy Energy Minister Assures

The Deputy Minister of Energy, William Owuraku Aidoo has reassured that workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will not lose their jobs despite the termination of the contract of Power Distribution Service (PDS).

“The workers continue to remain workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and this morning, the leaders of ECG will meet with the various unions of ECG to address the issue across the country to hint them on the latest proceeding,” he revealed.

He explained that, "once there was no transfer, the demand guarantee was not in place as of March 1, 2019, then it necessarily means that there was no transfer of workers and so the workers still remain the workers of ECG.”

According to him, ECG has written to the Energy Commission, informing them of the termination of the agreement between the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Power Distribution Service (PDS) of the concession.

Addressing the media at the Ministry of Information conference room, the deputy Energy Minister said the sales and retail of the energy license have already been suspended and that PDS up until today was still in possession of the distribution license.

He added that the distribution license of Power Distribution Service (PDS) to distribute power to customers will be terminated today by the Energy Commission as the law demands.

He, however, was emphatic that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will assume full control of the assets which used to be under the control of PDS when all the documentation has been affected today.

He alluded to the fact that as there is no concession agreement between Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Power Distribution Service (PDS), there cannot be a license for PDS to operate in terms of the distribution of power to customers in the country.
