Editorial: This Is A Terrible Tragedy Indeed!

Two school children, aged 12 and 15, died at Kyebi in the Eastern Region on Sunday when they fell into a pit dug and abandoned by illegal miners. Shell-shocked residents said they found the bodies of the two children, Kinglsey Effah Agyeman and his 15 year old elder brother, Kofi Darkwa, in the deep pit at about 3:00 p.m. Apparently, the older brother had tried to rescue his younger brother after he had fallen into the pit, and both drowned. We at the Daily searchlight cannot state how saddened and how enraged we are about this incident and how it became possible for us to lose two children in this unholy manner. To begin with, we must ask whether it is possible to identify the people who dug the illegal pit. We must also ask if it is possible to find out who gave the illegal miners the right to dig this pit. We must find the owners of the land, and we must find the District Chief Executive and every other single organisation and individual who made this tragedy possible. Beyond that, we must ask real and very tough questions about the problem of illegal mining, with the view to finding a permanent solution! Our sincere condolences to the family of the two children, and we hope that God will console them in this moment of great tragedy!
