Decentralisation Process Faced With Challenges

The Head of the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Mr. Kwesi Jonah says in spite of the importance of the decentralization process to the countrys democratic process, a number of factors are seriously undermining its effectiveness. These include inadequate funding and over deductions from the district assembly common fund by the Ministry of Local government. Mr. Jonah said these challenges are affecting development in the various districts. Mr. Jonah made these observations in an interview with Peace FM at a seminar organized by the political science students association (POSSA) of the University of Ghana as part of activities to mark its week celebration. It was on the theme Decentralization A Tool For Combating Poverty and Social exclusion. Dr. Nicholas Amponsah, a lecturer at the political science Department of the University of Ghana said the decentralization process has helped to ensure greater participation in the countrys democratic process.
