KIA To Attain FA Category One Status

The Kotoka International Airport (KIA) is in the process of attaining FA Category One status by close of the year. An FA category one status is given to international airports that meet civil aviation standards of air safety, navigation, security and infrastructure. Mr Mike Hammah, Minister of Transport, said this yesterday at a ground breaking ceremony for the commencement of work on the phase III KIA development project. The project which will cost $51 million is expected to be completed by the end of the year. It involves the construction of an ultra-modern fire service station to respond to aircraft emergencies, installation of an aeronautical ground lightening system, reconstruction of taxiway pavement, rehabilitation and construction of apron pavements, installation of fuel mains and construction of apron drainage facilities. Mr Hammah said the commencement of the project was in fulfillment of governments quest to make KIA the hub of air transport in the West African sub-region. The Minister stated that the aviation industry was a catalyst to accelerated development and growth adding that countries with improved system of airports attracted more people including investors and tourists. He said for the country to meet that status, it called for pro-activeness and urged the contractors of the project to put in their best.
