There is widespread wailing and gnashing of teeth at Burma Camp and other military camps across the country following what is seen as the deliberate deception practiced on soldiers by the National Democratic Congress (NDDC) party, which is now in power!
In the run-up to election 2008, soldiers across the country were told that if the NDC wins power, the policy of compulsory retirement of sliders after serving a number of years would be brought to an end, and in fact, even retired soldiers would be re-employed by the Ghana Armed Forces, (GAF).
�This is why we voted so massively for the NDC in the last election,� some soldiers told The Daily Searchlight. They told newsmen that since the NDC came to power, it is still continuing with the policy of compulsory retirement of soldiers who have served their tour of duty.
The Daily Searchlight has learned that beginning from April this year, the soldiers who were recruited into the army in 1979, 1981, 1982 and 1983 would be sent home on compulsory retirement, a situation that has distressed many of them.
�For many of them, all that they have known all their productive years has been soldiering, but now they are being sent home. What is painful is that they were told that if they vote out the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, they would be allowed to stay on in the army.
Sadly, they are now realising that they were tricked,� a source said.
