Mrs Roberta Mary Appau, Headmistress of Our Lady of Mercy (OLAM) Senior High School in Tema, has advised students in second cycle institutions to choose suitable subjects for their final examinations. That, she said, would enable them to pursue courses that would make them marketable, thus securing for them successful and prosperous rewarding lives in future. Mrs Appau gave the advice at a Career Conference organised for students of the school to educate them on the importance of career counselling, which normally begins with the subjects and courses they choose and offer for their final year examinations. She urged the students to take Career Guidance and Counselling seriously, so that they would grow to be responsible future leaders. The Headmistress said the mission and vision of the school was to give quality education that would prepare its young and budding students spiritually, morally, and academically for the fast and dynamic Ghanaian and International society. Dr Mrs Margaret Gyapong, Home Economist and Medical Practitioner, one of the resource persons, advised the students to strive for excellence by taking their studies seriously. Mrs Margaret Hanson, a Dietician, defined Dietetics as the Science of treating diseases with food, instead of using drugs. She attributed the shortage of Dieticians in the system to the failure of most of the professionals to return home after their exodus to overseas in search of greener pastures. Mrs Hanson urged the students to take keen interest in the Dietetics Course so that there would be enough professionals in the country. Rev, Fr Dennis Opoku, a Catholic Priest, whose talk was on Priesthood, said the vocation was a sacrificial one that required committed and dedicated people. Rev Fr Opoku said the life of the Priest was basically the sum total of what pertained in society. Miss Sheila Menka Premo, Legal Practitioner, said a course in the legal profession could be pursued at any point in life, and advised the students to take keen interest in it and study Law at the University.
