BNI Finally Releases Herbert Mensah

Peacefmonline.com can reveal that former Country Manager of MNET West Africa and a close confidante of the Rawlingses, Herbert Mensah, has been released on bail by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI). The ex-Kotoko Chief Executive Officer was released a little after 7pm on Monday, after nearly nine hours of interrogation by the Bureau. BNI operatives subjected the interrogee to another form of interrogation technique - prolonged isolation - by virtually keeping him out of public contact in an empty questioning room for hours. It is unclear whether he was later grilled by the BNI. Herbert Mensah was initially asked to report to the BNI's Headquarters at Ridge on Monday, but when the former Chief Executive Officer of Kumasi Asante Kotoko arrived somewhere around 10am, he was hurriedly whisked away to another BNI facility, the regional office close to the 37 Military Hospital, for interrogation. All his mobile phones and other communication equipment were confiscated. The business magnate headlined virtually all the leading newspapers in the country recently when he disclosed to PeaceFM and other media outlets that he has in his possession, security tapes supposedly recorded by security personnel attached to the Osu Castle, touching on an amount of 90 billion to be used as campaign money for President Mills re-election bid. A claim which elicited an uncharacteristic outburst of laughter from President Mills. Prior to Herbert Mensah's release, supporters of the Nana Konadu campaign bid threatened to head to the offices of the BNI to protest his incarceration. Spokesperson of the Friends of Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings (FONKAR), Dela Cofie, in an interview during PeaceFM News@6pm expressed indignation at the treatment being meted out to Mr Mensah. According to him the action by the BNI is part of a grand plot of intimidation by government officials to cow supporters of Nana Konadu into submission. To show solidarity, he said, persons incensed at what he claims to be the mistreatment of Mr. Mensah were converging at a point, before trekking to the offices of the BNI to demand his release.
