Nigerians Call on Defence Minister

22 members of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) of Nigeria have paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Defence, Lt Gen Henry Smith (Rtd). The group, led by Abubarkar S. Mohammed, Acting Director in charge of coordinating, monitoring and evaluation, was in the country as part of their studies in the institute. Mr. Mohammed said �the visit to Ghana was based on the theme for their studies. This year our theme is �Managing Nigeria�s Pluralism for Peace and National Development� and that is our main reason for coming to Ghana.� Welcoming the delegation on behalf of the Defence Minister, the Chief Director of the Ministry, Ofosu Appeah said the delegation visited the ministry to learn something new that would be useful in the formation of their national policies. Heads of the various departments of the ministry also gave the delegation a brief presentation on new developments in their departments. Ben Asomani, Head of Human Resource Department of the ministry, said the ministry has begun undertaking infrastructure and developmental projects. �We provide social infrastructure and development such as roads and highway construction in remote parts of the country where civilian contractors will not go for fear of safety,� he said. The Principal General Staff Officer of the center, Col. AL Wuni said the armed forces carry out civilian tasks. �We give assistance to civilians and organizations during floods and other disasters,� he noted. He however mentioned that even though the ministry is faced with challenges such as inadequate personnel due to international missions, it will continue to discharge its duties and responsibilities.
