First-ever Susan G. Komen Ghana Race For The Cure On May 25

One woman die from breast cancer in every 68 seconds somewhere around the world. More than 1,300,000 women died from breast cancer globally in 2010, and 2062 women were diagnosed with the disease in Ghana, a country which ranks 10th in the burden of the disease in Africa (Globacan sources). However, breast cancer can be cured if it is diagnosed earlier. On Wednesday, 25 May 2011, the young and the old could contribute towards winning the race of search for a cure, by joining the first-ever Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Ghana. The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Series is the worlds largest and most successful education and fundraising event for breast cancer ever created. Started in 1983, the Komen Race for the Cure Series has grown from one Race with 800 people in Dallas to a global series of more than 140 Races with 1.6 million people participating on four continents. The Ghana Race presented by a leading breast cancer awareness creation and research organization in Ghana, Breast Care International is open to everyone. The events organizers expect to attract about 10000 participants. Participants in this pioneering annual walk/race would cover the route from the Kumasi Cultural Centre to the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, during which they would aim to raise awareness, by providing information on the disease. Dr. (Mrs.) Beatrice Wiafe-Addai, president of Breast Care International expresses that: BCI thought it timely to bring the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure to Ghana, as we believe that in our own inimitable and special Ghanaian way, we could contribute to raising awareness on this disease, which affects us all in varying degrees - women, men and children. This event would focus on a serious issue-preventing the untimely death from breast cancer. However, we aim to have fun in the process. Highlights at the end of the walk would include a concert and glimpses into the lives of some cancer survivors. Corporate organizations are also encouraged to join in raising even more awareness of this event by offering their time, products, services or by donating towards this very worthy cause. Please do join us in this Race to spread the word that early detection of breast cancer may lead to high survival rates. Ranking 10th in the burden of breast cancer, Ghana is also Africas third country ever to host this walk/race. Ghana has chosen the African Union day to host her first Komen Race. It is indeed symbolic that this Race will take place on a day that Africans across the continent remind each other to unite in our fight for a better future. About Susan G. Komen for the Cure Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. The promise, in 1982 became the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the worlds largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure and Komen 3-Day for the Cure, we have invested more than $1.9 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
