'Lights Off' To Reduce Significantly By 2012 - Energy Commission

The Energy Ministry has said it is optimistic the Energy Commissions announcement that erratic power supply in Ghana will be over in 12 months will come to pass. According to the ministry, funds have been made available for the replacement of obsolete equipment to the major power supply companies. The energy commission revealed that the ECG and the Ghana Grid Company Limited have all outlined programs to upgrade their systems. The commission believes this should position both companies to improve upon their supply of power to consumers in a years time. The head of public affairs at the Energy Commission, Edward Bawa told Citi News government is committed to ensuring that this objective is realized. Some of the things were currently doing include soliciting funds to replace some of the obsolete materials that are causing the erratic power outages. We currently are installing a second 66 MVA transformer at the Mallam sub-station. The first transformer would be commissioned in June and the second one would be commissioned in September. "Were also putting up a third bulk supply point for Accra because Accra has been so congested. Looking at the industries springing up and we have got the funding, weve got the contractor, it is only proper that we put up a third bulk supply point. We're hoping that by 2012 we should be able to increase the reliability of supply of power and reduce significantly the outages that we experience as a people Edward Bawa added.
