The PURC has withheld tariff increases for electricity and water for the 2nd quarter 2011 review of tariffs which begins on 1st June, under the Automatic Adjustment Formula (AAF). According to the commission, it has decided to withhold the tariff increases in spite of some increases in some key variables which impact on the operations of the utility service providers which under normal circumstance result in increase in tariffs. Mr. Samuel Sarpong, a Member of the commission announced this at a press conference in Accra on Friday. He said the PURC�s decision follows increasing deterioration in the quality of service provided by the utility companies and widespread consumer dissatisfaction. He added that the PURC will dialogue with stakeholders including the utility companies to identify the causes of the recent poor quality of services rendered by the utility companies. Nana Yaa Gyantuah, Public Relations Director of the PURC said the commissions decision will prompt the utility companies to sit up.
