Rawlings Lights Flame To Mark June 4

The Revolution Square in Accra was filled to capacity with enthusiastic members of the NDC who came to witness a solemn wreath laying ceremony commemorating 32-years of the June 4 Uprising. Adorned in white T-shirts with the bold inscription � June 4 prevails � the teeming crowds sang and danced while waiting for the commencement of the programme. The ceremony began with the pouring of libation, followed by Muslim and Christian prayers. A minute of silence was observed for those who lost their lives during the uprising after which the wreaths were laid. The first wreath was laid by former Minister of Education Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah on behalf of Ghanaians while the second wreath, which was laid on behalf of the security services, was done by the Minister of Justice and Attorney General Mr Martin Amidu. The third was laid by the deputy minister for Agric in charge of Fisheries, Nii Amasa Namoale, with the help of Rejoice Ahiable and Allen Torsu on behalf of the Cadre Corps of the NDC and the last, which was laid by WO1 Ben Della and co, was done to honour the principles of probity and accountability. Former General Officers Commander, Lt-Gen. Arnold Quainoo (RTD), in the company of two others, lighted the perpetual flame to signify the continuity of the ideals of the June 4 uprising. Ex- president Jerry John Rawlings, who graced the ceremony with his wife and children, is to address a crowd at a forum in Kumasi which would climax the commemoration of the Uprising. Some ministers and deputy minister of state as well as leading members of the NDC such as Dr Kwabena Adjei, National Chairman of the NDC, Mr Asiedu Nketia, General Secretary as well as Mr Richard Quashigah, National Propaganda Secretary were at the ceremony.
