Court Throws Out Application By University of Ghana Students

An Accra Fast Track High Court on Friday June 10, threw out an application by some students of the University of Ghana to restrain the school from declaring results of the recently held SRC elections. The students who also wanted to contest the elections were disqualified by the University because they failed to make a grade point average of 2.5. The students contended that the directive from the school was unconstitutional, but the court dismissed the application. Electoral Commissioner for the Students Representative Council of the University of Ghana, Lordina Abeka Afari told Citi News that with the clearance given by the court, she will go ahead and announce the election results. The Electoral Commission now has the power or the permission to declare the results. Initially we released a Press Statement that we could not certify and declare the results because of the court proceeding that was started by a student of the University. So we said that we were going to wait for the court to decide on the matter and we would act accordingly. Now the court has decided and we have the authority to declare the results, so we would go ahead and declare the results.
