'Nobody in NPP Is A Grassroot Man Than Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia' - Kofi Tonto

NPP stalwart, Kofi Tonto has refuted any claims that seek to paint a picture that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia cheated his way to massively winning the party's Special Delegates Congress on Saturday, August 26.

Vice President Dr. Bawumia's victory has been described as "overwhelming and emphatic" as he polled 629 out of 961 votes while his competitors, Kennedy Agyapong, Alan Kyerematen, Owusu Afriyie-Akoto, Thomas Addai Nimoh gained 132, 95, 36 and 9 votes respectively.

But Kennedy Agyapong and Alan Kyerematen have raised concerns of intimidation against their polling agents during the elections.

“President Akufo-Addo, I swear to God, I will give you a showdown. Vice president, I will give you a showdown. You’ve chased away my agent for him to hide in a room, we shall see. You will hear what will happen. I swear to God, I will challenge President Akufo-Addo anytime,” Mr. Agyapong has threatened.

Reacting to the allegations, Kofi Tonto noted that Dr. Bawumia genuinely obtained his landslide victory.

According to him, his win was a reward by the delegates for his hard work and selfless service to the New Patriotic Party.

"Dr. Bawumia's victory was because he has worked hard. He won because he has served well. He won because he has sacrificed himself for the party and its success. He won because he knows how to work harmoniously with people from all races", he said on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" show Thursday morning.

He admonished the critics not to kid themselves into thinking Dr. Bawumia isn't so popular with the NPP grassroots.

"Nobody is a grassroots man than Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia", he stated categorically, adding Dr. Bawumia's touch with the grassroots began when he was a Running Mate to becoming Vice President of the Republic of Ghana.
