$8.5m For AFCON 2023: Monies Were Taken From The Contingency Vault - Ablakwa Makes More Disclosures

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has alleged that the Youth and Sports Ministry budgeted an estimated $8.5 million, equivalent to GH¢105 million, for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has been asked to account for the monies spent on the Black Stars' campaign at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Mr. Ablakwa claimed to have obtained documents from the Youth and Sports Ministry revealing that the budget for AFCON 2023 is US$8,506,450.00.

Speaking to this in an interview on Peace Power Sports with Dan Kweku Yeboah, the North Tongu MP said: "Per the laws of Ghana, the budget should've come to Parliament for final approval but to do this on the blind side of Parliament is illegal".

He explained the $ 8.5 million is just for the AFCON; that is a few days of preparations and monies spent at the tournament in Cote D'Ivoire, adding more was spent during the qualifiers.

"Do you know even the monies used during the qualifiers weren't approved by Parliament, it was after we qualified that they came to report to us because they needed our blessing for the 2024 budget. It emerged that they took the money from the contingency vault which is a violation of Article 177..." he added.
