NPP Executives Warn Against Severe Flooding In Ashaiman

Executives of the opposition New Patriotic Party in Ashaiman are warning against severe flooding in the municipality if residents in flood prone areas are not relocated. According to them, exactly a year after floods killed close to twenty people and destroyed thousands of property, government is yet to fully assist all the victims. The NPP Constituency executives have described as untrue claims by the Municipal Assembly that each flood victim received an amount of 500 Ghana Cedis in addition to relief items. A Member of the Ashaiman NPP Communications Team, Abdul Aziz, told Citi News major drains in the Municipality are choked and this could cause a major havoc in the event of a downpour. He said it has taken Government too long to desilt the gutters thereby posing a threat to residents. Below is a Statement: Ashaiman NPP recounts plight of constituents Exactly a year ago, the good people of Ashaiman experienced the unexpected where a lot of people died during the flood, due to the negligence and recklessness on the part of the Chief Executive of the Municipal Assembly. It was very striking yesterday, when the MCE stated on an Accra based radio station, that each and every person that suffered as a result of the flood on 20th June, 2010 was given Five Hundred (500) Ghana Cedis. By this revelation, we urge the President to investigate this claim as the people that were badly affected did not receive the said amount. It also came to light that an amount of Forty Thousand (40,000) Ghana Cedis and other relief items that were released by the assembly to the victims were channeled to the pockets and warehouses of party big wigs of NDC within the Ashaiman constituency. Till date, the gutters has not been dredged, and debris from last years demolition has still not been cleared from the main gutters and we fear the unexpected could happen again as we are about to experience another torrential rainfall. The support from the government of the day was very insignificant to the people who suffered on that fateful day, but other well meaning Ghanaians, Philanthropists and organization saw the need to come to their aid. Of particular importance were Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Hon Kennedy Ohene Adjapong and Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings. We are very much grateful to them and appreciate their effort. We will also like to use this platform to sympathize with the affected families and hope we do our very best to avert any such thing in the future through our actions. THE PRESIDENTS VISIT AND DEVELOPMENTAL ISSUES Until 2001 when the NPP assumed the governance of the state, Ashaiman was not getting its fair share of developmental projects when it was under the Tema Municipal Assembly. The NPP under the leadership of His Excellency J.A Kuffour gave Ashaiman a Municipal status. Some of the developments the NPP initiated and completed included the following but not limited to: Construction of the Ashaiman flyover, Market square roads, (under urban 4 Project) Main market Stores, Classroom blocks for the cluster of schools,(No 6) 10 public toilets Bridges,(Roman Down- Jericho and Mali Estate-Jericho) Expansion of facilities at the Ashaiman Polyclinic Street Lighting System (1000 poles and bulbs for the Ashaiman Township) Official Town New Town Road Drainage system at Middle East Expansion of facilities at the Ashaiman Senior High School. Fencing of key institutions (Police Station, Polyclinic, Roman Football Park, Cluster of Schools and Ashaiman municipal Assembly and Ashaiman Senior High School). It is striking to note that all major developmental projects in the Ashaiman Township were carried out by the Danquah-Busia- Dombo tradition (PP and NPP). Under the 27months reign of Busia these projects were carried out within Ashaiman. Over 20 publics toilets The Ashaiman Government school Extension of electricity and water to Ashaiman The first major road in Ashaiman (Astady road from Astady roundabout to Adjei Kojo under bridge) Low cost quarters at Sikafoabatem and Market Square. Because there is no project to be commissioned by the president in the municipality, we will plead with the President, to use his visit to ascertain the extent of the bad roads which is making life very difficult for drivers and commuters and its attendant terrible traffic jam and hardship. Filth and economic hardship is also slowly but surely killing the people and would urge the President to use the opportunity to address these terrible problems and not come and engage in any propaganda commissioning when actually there is none.
