Man Hacks Wife In Rage

A 40-year-old second-hand clothes dealer, Kwadwo Mintah, is in the grips of the police at Suhum for locking up his wife in their room for two weeks after he had inflicted machete wounds on her over a trivial domestic issue. Mintah, who hails from Larteh-Akuapem in the Eastern region, is said to have subjected his wife, Portia Gattor, 28, with whom he had two sets of twins, to a series of physical abuse, slashing her head about two weeks ago and locking her up in their hired room at Boye Fitter, a suburb of Suhum. Last Sunday, Portia managed to escape through the window of their room to report her ordeal to the police but she was not lucky enough as the husband saw her and attacked her with a cudgel until she fell unconscious. She had to be given an emergency treatment at the theatre of the Suhum Government Hospital before she was resuscitated. Briefing Daily Guide, the Suhum District Police Commander, DSP Anane Appiah said Kwadwo Mintah was a habitual wife beater who had been attacking his wife with deadly weapons upon the least provocation. According to him, the police had information around 12.30pm on Sunday that Mintah had hit the wife with a big club in the face. According to the police commander, after Mintah had beaten the wife, he went for a machete and threatened anyone who would dare come to the aid of his wife.He said when the police got to the scene, they saw Mintah aggressively brandishing the machete and even daring the policemen to come near him. He explained that because of the aggressive posture of Mintah, the police had no choice than to shoot his foot to enable them to overpower and arrest him to the police station. We realised the machete wounds inflicted on the wifes head were deteriorating so the hospital authorities had to give her an emergency treatment, he noted. According to him, Mintah, who was arrested on Sunday, was being processed for court for his criminal act.The wife, Portia Gattor, who spoke to Daily Guide, said the husband had constantly been attacking her with machetes. Daily Guide saw multiple cutlass wounds on her left hands and her face, with her head bandaged. She said the attack on her about two weeks ago was because the husband said he suspected her of gossiping about him to her friend, an act which she denied. She said she was fed up with the repeated physical abuse and wanted the laws of the land to deal with him. Daily Guide also learnt that Portia Gattor was however pleading with the police, after she gained consciousness, to deal leniently with her husband because she loves him.
