The Controller and Accountant General, Raphael Tuffuor, has denied reports in sections of the media suggesting that some public sector workers have not been paid their June salaries because �Government is broke�, as captioned in the Daily Guide newspaper of Thursday June 30. According to the Paper, about 250,000 teachers on Government payroll have not been paid for the month of June. The Paper said it was a worrying trend worsened by the migration of some public workers onto the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS), as government is saddled with the extra burden of finding more money to meet the demand of the new salary regime. It said some public and civil servants have not received their June salaries till date, though the month ends today Thursday June 30. According to the Paper, its sources at the Controller and Accountant General�s Department, which facilitates and pays salaries of workers on behalf of government, confirmed that workers of the department have not received their salaries for June. However, the Controller and Accountant General, Raphael Tuffuor, has told Citi News the report is inaccurate. He explained that all salaries have been paid by his outfit but perhaps were yet to be processed by the respective banks. �All those on our payroll including teachers were paid on Tuesday (June 28). But what is happening is that some of the banks are slow in processing the salaries. We informed the Bank of Ghana which advised the banks to pay the workers. But it often depends on the bank that is processing the salary. So what is happening is not that the Government is broke. The Government is not broke. The payments have been done. I don�t know where the Paper got its source from� he noted. According to Mr Tuffuor, other public sector workers including those in the various security services have been paid, although they are not directly paid by the Accountant General�s Department.
