Thirty-six-year-old trader Martha Abangre, who was arrested by the Tema DOVVSU for stealing a baby from its mother, has been granted bail in the sum of GH�1000 with two sureties.
She will reappear in the court presided over Mrs. Lorinda Owusu today.
According to the judge, even though the offence was not bailable, she granted the suspect bail on the plea of her counsel, Amoako Acheampong. The court has however issued a strong warning that if she failed to turn up in court on the given date, a bench warrant would be issued for her arrest and she would remain behind bars until her trial was over.
The accused allegedly stole the baby from her mother under the pretext of helping her with GH�30 to enable her to travel back to Walewale. The accused was put before the court and was remanded in police custody until her bail.
The accused person, according to police, lured the mother into believing that she could help her, upon realizing that she (mother) could not cater for the baby and needed money. The facts of the case are that on May 5, 2011, the mother came across the accused person while shopping for her baby.
The accused was said to have interrogated her and got to know all her problems and opted to help her out with money so that she could go back to Walewale, where she comes from. The accused therefore asked the mother to meet her the following day for assistance.
The accused, according to the prosecutor, Chief Marteyfio, promised to give her an amount of �30 when she met the nursing mother and asked her to accompany her to Abeka for the money since she had only �20 on her.
The prosecutor further added that when the two arrived at Abeka, the accused could not get her the money but lured her to Tema. The mother, who did not have money and thought the accused genuinely wanted to help her, also followed her with any questions. On the way to Tema Community 1, the accused took the baby from her mother with the intention of her helping her out. When they arrived, the accused was said to have taken the mother and baby to a �chop bar� and ordered food for her.
The accused then excused herself to visit the washroom, taking the baby along but she never returned with the baby. The mother quickly made a report with the Tema DOVVSU and a message was sent to all police stations in the country and a report made on radio stations.
The accused was arrested on May 18, 2011 at Bolgatanga with the baby, and police investigations revealed that this was her third time of committing such a crime.
