Likpe: Man Admits Poisoning Children

A Resident of Likpe Bakwa, near Hohoe in the Volta Region, John Bedu, has publicly claimed responsibility for the deaths of some five children and a woman in the area last Sunday, July 3. Citi News broke the story of the death of the children after they allegedly ate guava fruits while in Likpe Bakwa for a Catholic sacrament service. At the time only three children had been reported dead. The count rose to six when a woman and two other children were reported to have also been poisoned. Doctors reportedly confirmed that the deceased died through the poisoning of the fruits and requested samples for examination. However John Bedu claims that the children and the woman died because they benefited from money stolen from him, which he had failed to retrieve despite publicly advising the thief to return it or face the consequences. He had thus sought spiritual assistance to retrieve his money or punish the thief. He spoke to Shalom Lumor from our sister station Heritage FM in the Volta Region. My name is John Bedu from Likpe Bakwa; some time ago my money got missing. I reported it to the chief and so an announcement was made by the gong-gong beater. This was done four times. "I still did not see anything or hear anything about the money. The chief asked me to exercise some patience. I waited for a long time but still no money. So I went somewhere to get the money and I was asked to perform some rites that had to do with cooking for my sisters twins". "Immediately the twins ate the food the deaths started to happen in the said family. Asked what he could do to stop the deaths, Bedu replied: They should come to me and I will take them to the place I reported the case".
