NUGS Condemn UG For Sanctioning 'Amina' Students

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has described as reckless the decision by the University of Ghana authorities to sanction some seven students over the molestation of Amina Haruna, a suspected female thief, at the University. The union said the universitys action was made in a rush only to save its image, ignoring the rights of the students, some of whom are standing trial in court. The University dismissed one student while six others have been suspended for two academic years. Speaking to Citi News, the President of NUGS, Hamza Suhini condemned the decision, saying the University should have waited for the outcome of the case in court before taking any action. This decision is laughable and we do not mince words by condemning the action of university for the current action taken, as far as the Amina saga is concerned. When the story first broke out, we even volunteered to partner with the university to find the perpetrators of this act. We have now, undoubtedly, confirmed the manner in which the investigation was conducted especially in the current development; one would expect the university to have restrained or waited for the court ruling first, before embarking on any decision like this. Mr. Suhini described the expulsion as troubling and called on the public to denounce such deeds. I sincerely believe that the decision was not in good taste; it was reckless and an upfront to the rules of natural justice. This decision is worrying and I think that all well meaning Ghanaians must come out boldly in condemnation of this singular act by the University of Ghana.
