GUPS Disappointed In UCOMS

The Ghana Union of Professional Students (GUPS) wish to express its deepest disappointment in the administrators of the University College of Management Studies (UCOMS) Accra for failing to admit students with the required grades as prescribed by the National Accreditation Board. It has come to the notice of the GUPS that some final year students of the university are being asked to re-sit their West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) papers in order to better their grades before graduation, however, the union wish to state that the students needed not to have been admitted in the first place. What happen to the four years they spent in school and the astronomical fees they paid to the university? In addition, most students who are beneficiaries of such favors may forget or ignore the request by the school to better their grades since they have been admitted into the university already. The conduct of the school authorities is a clear indication that they (The School Authorities) concentrate much on how to make huge profits rather than seeking to build a better human resource for the country. As much as the union appreciates their efforts in helping students who do not have better grades to enter into a university for a better future, we believe that all tertiary institutions particularly private universities needed to ensure that the students they admit are qualified per the standards of the National Accreditation Board. GUPS wish to therefore use this opportunity to call on all school authorities, especially private universities, to ensure that students who are admitted have the requisite grades for an entry into the university. We also wish to suggest that universities that wish to help students with poor grades may organize a one year remedial classes for the students so they can re-sit and pass all their papers and then be absorbed immediately to pursue their course of interest. For further information kindly contact the GUPS President. Signed
