After successfully crushing Former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings at the just ended Sunyani Congress, President John Evans Atta Mills has retained Vice President John Dramani Mahama as his running mate for Election 2012. The pair will face NPP�s Nana Akufo-Addo, who is yet to name his running mate.
Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, General Secretary of NDC, broke the news to the media in Accra immediately after President Mills had consulted the National Executive Committee (NEC) and it was agreed that Vice President Mahama be retained as the running mate.
Mr. Nketia said the procedure, according to the party�s Constitution, gave President Mills the prerogative to choose his running mate in consultation with NEC. He said NEC had also decided to open nominations for the Parliamentary seats on Tuesday, August 16, for NDC orphan constituencies to win those seats in Election 2012. Former President Rawlings who is the founder of the NDC was not at the Meeting even though he was given letter to attend.
Mr. Asediu Nketia could not tell why Mr. Rawlings failed to show up. In 2008 when Mr. Mahama was nominated Mr. Rawlings got there when the meeting had ended but this time he did not show up at all.
