Sammy Awuku, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team and an associate of the Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), was the target of armed men last Thursday evening in an Accra suburb.
Wearing dark suits and armed with pistols, the two persons appeared to have trailed their target after he had finished a radio station programme at Joy FM until he stopped at the Admiral Restaurant in the Roman Ridge area of Accra.
News about the development was first broken by an Accra-based radio station, Oman FM, soon after it took place.
Sammy Awuku recalled how, after the radio programme between 5.30 and 6.20pm, he decided to pay a visit to Boakye Agyarko, head of the NPP flag bearer�s campaign team where he said �I spent 15 minutes and headed for the Nima Roundabout and the Kanda Highway route soon hitting Kawo Kudi Junction.
�I drove to the Roman Ridge and parked in front of a row of shops feeling hungry. I decided to go into the restaurant for a meal asking a security man around to keep an eye on the vehicle,� he said.
As he sat down to a plate of a meal, he said, he heard people making noise outside and soon the security man came in to enquire whether he was responsible for the activated alarm outside. Soon, the unfolding story dawned on him rather rudely.
Two suit-spotting official-looking gentlemen with a rare audacity had broken the rear side of his Toyota Highlander with registration number GS 7242-11 making away with his laptop, a press statement, pen drive and a charger.
An amount of Ghc1000 in Ghc50 denominations enclosed in an unsealed envelope with a cellophane-covered side visibly showing the currency was left intact. The intruders had no need for the money, an action which fuelled the suspicion that the pistol-wielding officials were on a special mission.
Bystanders, who were attracted to the scenario by the explosive sound and the scattering of glass into smithereens, could not make good their decision to confront the intruders when the �officials� pulled out their weapons and aimed at the scared persons.
They succeeded in subduing the bystanders who could have put up a fight as they made away with their quarry of a laptop, charger, pen drive and a press statement.
The victim of the rude operation was said to have been hospitalized after taking ill earlier.
He has reported the incident to the Airport Police Station which has commenced investigations into it. Emmanuel Asigri, a former DCE under the Kufuor administration and also a vocal political activist, had his vehicle driven into by men who immediately drove off under suspicious circumstances.
