The Editor of the Daily Searchlight newspaper, Ken Kuranchie, has raised doubts about the credibility of letters made available from the Presidency as correspondence between President Mills and the management of Regimanuel Gray Estate in the matter of the proposed extension to the President�s private residence on the Spintex Road, in Accra.
According to the letters, the President is to pay for the project which is to serve as accommodation for members of the President�s security detail.
But Mr. Kuranchie, whose newspaper first reported what was described as a �mansion� for the president, told Citi News the interval between the date the letters were purportedly written and the execution of the project further raises doubts about the urgency of the extension as the Castle will have Ghanaians believe.
The letters were reportedly written in early April, but when newsmen visited the site on Tuesday August 16, 2011, the projects was still at the elementary stage. Citi FM�s Richard Mensah, who joined the team, said the proposed two bedroom structure was at the foundation level, and was unlikely to be a storey building, given the quantity of iron rods and cement that was being used for the foundation. The security officers are currently housed in tents and answer nature�s call in portable mobile toilets.
Speaking to Citi News, Mr Kuranchie said he suspects the president might be up to something fishy as the facts of the case do not add up.
�We have good reason to question what we are being told. When this publication first came out it was not Ken Kuranchie or the Daily Searchlight but the spokesperson of the President (Koku Anyidoho) who said the facility was complete, that the facility has been given as a token to the President in appreciation of the fact that the President was living at Regimanuel Estates�
�He has since then come out with a contradictory position that the thing is rather to be built and rented. "So the same person says that it is a gift that has been transferred to us and then he turns round to say that it is now going to be built�.
Ken Kuranchie also raised issue with the supposed letters written between the President and Regimanuel Gray, calling it a �forgery�.
He said �the correspondence that (Koku Anyidoho) gave to the press, you realize that these are not letters from the President that are not even referenced.
�The 7th April letter and the 11th April letter are not referenced and in my opinion - which I believe very strongly - they must be forgeries because most of these letters emanating from the Presidency are not signed by the President himself.
"They are signed by the Chief of Staff and the copies I have seen, I am in the process of studying them very carefully but I do not think these ones were signed by the Chief of Staff�.
