Soldier Arrested For Visa Fraud

THE SAKUMONO District Police in Tema have arrested an imposter who posed as a Military Corporal attached to the Burma Camp in Accra and defrauded one Doreen, his lover, of GH11,000.00. The suspect, Alex Annang Odai, a 31-year-old resident of Ashaiman, was said to have defrauded his victim under the pretext of securing her travelling documents to Germany. The District Commander, Superintendent Alex C. Wowolo, told Daily Guide that the suspect, who always dressed in military uniform, met the victim in June 2011 at Tema, where they struck acquaintance. Annang was said to have told his victim that he had written an officers exams at Lebanon in the Middle-East and emerged the overall best candidate. As part of his award, he was given the opportunity to travel with his family to any country of his choice to serve as a military officer so he chose Germany and wanted his victim to travel with him as his wife. According to the commander, the suspect told the victim that he was supposed to pay a certain amount of money to some institutions in the country but did not have it, therefore the woman should help him. The suspect first collected GH9000 which he claimed was to be paid to the Ghana Armed Forces and the German Embassy in Accra for their travelling documents. He later took GH600.00 as visa fees, and GH800.00 for surgery at a special hospital to erase a tattoo on his arm. The commander added that the suspect earlier went for GH600.00 for their passports. Annang later contacted his victim on phone again, claiming that he had been issued with a German visa and that he was supposed to travel on July 27, 2011 so the lover could join him later. He however sent his victim a text message two days before his supposed travelling date and told her that his flight had been cancelled until further notice. Superintendent Wowolo noted that the suspect then went into hiding and switched his phone off, making it difficult for his victim to reach him. The suspect later called the victim on phone with a different number, claiming that the Ghana Armed Forces had dismissed him and he no longer resided in the barracks, therefore he needed money for accommodation. Doreen became suspicious and reported the incident to the Sakumono Police and he was arrested when he resurfaced to collect money for rent. He was said to have admitted to the offence of fraud and impersonation during police interrogation and would be arraigned after investigations are concluded.
