Lord Hammah Arrested

A POPULAR National Democratic Congress (NDC) activist and leading member of the Gbevlo-Lartey sponsored Alliance for Responsible Opposition (AFRO), Lord Hammah, has been arrested and arraigned before the Tema Circuit Court B, presided over by Mrs. Anandah Aikins, for defrauding by false pretenses. AFRO is now defunct after the leading members fought over alleged cash donated to the group by the National Security for their operations. The accused person, also a self-styled Public Relations practitioner, was said to be facing a similar case at the Tema Buffalo unit. Lord Hammah pleaded not guilty to defrauding a certain Jamel Darouy of GH8,600 under the guise of providing him with a Land Rover vehicle and was granted a GH10, 000 bail with two sureties. According to the prosecuting officer, Chief Inspector Evelyn Susuawu, during the last quarter of the year 2010, the accused person told the complainant who wanted to buy a car that he could acquire a confiscated Land Rover vehicle for him at the Tema port. She said that based on this false submission, the complainant, on December 9, 2010, issued a UT Bank cheque number 0031000000104 with the face value of GH8,600.00 and handed it over to the accused person. The prosecutor added that the accused person, upon successfully cashing the cheque, failed to honour his promise. She said all efforts made to retrieve the money proved futile and the matter was reported to the Tema Regional Criminal Investigations Department The accused person was subsequently arrested and in his caution statement admitted to the offence. He was therefore charged with the offence and put before the court where he has been granted bail to re-appear on a later date. Another AFRO member, Bernard Rock Nii Arku Yartey is also being chased by the police for allegedly defrauding a University of Ghana lecturer of GH4,900 in exchange for two plots of land and a car. According to information available to Daily Guide, the suspect escaped by jumping over a wall when the police got to his house to effect his arrest and he has since not been found. He has been declared wanted by the Legon Police.
