MTN Ghana Foundation has presented a variety of items to the Shama District Health Directorate to enhance quality reproductive and health delivery in the district. The items were donated in support of the Pregnancy Register and Handing-Over System (PRHOS) developed to ensure quality maternal and child health care for the people in the district. The following were handed over to the District Health Directorate: � 4 desktop computers to assist in data entry of pregnant women � 1 ultrasound machine for the use at the Health centre � 10 haemoglobinometers � New registers for capturing data during community outreach � Call credits for field volunteers MTN Ghana Foundation�s support to the Shama District Health Directorate is in line with its vision to enrich the lives of communities in the area of health. Mr. Samuel Appiah, Senior Manager for Western and Central Business districts said, �We are aware that the health of a nation is its wealth and maternal health is a critical area in our national development because of its impact on the socio-economic development of the country. For this reason, MTN Ghana Foundation continues to make huge investments in this area to enable the country meet its Millennium Development Goals�. Mr. Appiah urged the Shama District Health Directorate to ensure proper handing and maintenance of the equipment in order to prolong the life span of the items. Since its establishment in 2007, the MTN Ghana Foundation has invested about four millions US dollars into socio-economic development projects in the areas of health and education across the country. To support the country in the area of health, the Foundation has undertaken many projects including the refurbishment of the maternity ward of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, the provision of equipment at the cost of 600,000 USD, the presentation of 91,000 USD to the Princess Marie Louise Children Hospital in Accra to aid the construction of an intensive care unit, the refurbishment of the Kpedze Health Centre and the presentation of medical equipment to the Kotokuom Health Centre among others. The Pregnancy Register and Handing-over system (PRHOS) was designed by the Shama District Health Directorate as part of the Western Regional Health Directorate�s effort at achieving the Millennium Development Goals of reducing maternal and infant mortality. PRHOS is basically a provider-led approach to delivering reproductive and child health care, in contrast to the passive client-led approach which exists in the health system now. PRHOS is a two-pronged strategy made up of Pregnancy Register where a team of health professional monitor mother until delivery and continues with the child until a year where the certificate specifying areas requiring close attention is handed over to the mother forms the second stage.
