Muntaka In Auto Crash

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawase in the Ashanti Region, Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, was involved in accident on Monday morning at Akaase Junction near Anyinam in the Eastern Region. The MP was treated and discharged at the regional hospital at Koforidua. It has however emerged that the accident happened when the former Minister for Youth and Sports tried to overtake two cars at a stretch. According to sources at Anyinam, the MP, who was travelling from Kumasi to Accra in his Toyota Landcruiser with registration number AS 555-10, with three others, attempted to overtake the two vehicles at a go. But the last car, a Kia Rhino truck with registration GR 9692-11, loaded with sachet water, had already indicated that it was branching to Ankaase; however Muntaka attempted to overtake the two vehicles, by which time the Kia truck had also initiated the bend to the left towards Ankaase. Some reports said the Kia truck ran into Muntakas car. The source explained that the minister tried to avoid the truck by squeezing through the little space left on the shoulders of the road but ended up hitting the front side of the truck. This forced the vehicle to veer off the road and somersault several times, leading to Muntaka sustaining serious bodily injuries. He was initially rushed to the Enyiresi Government Hospital but was transferred to the regional hospital in Koforidua because of the degree of injury. His car, which was reported to have been towed to the police headquarters in Koforidua, was not sent there but believed to have been towed to Accra. In a related development, a Toyota Landcruiser V8 with registration number GR 1485-09, rammed into a taxi with registration number ER 1485-U on the newly-constructed Koforidua Kassardjan road. The accident led to the death of 56-year-old Abena Afriyie, with three passengers sustaining injuries. The driver of the taxi however escaped unhurt. The accident occurred at the SNNIT junction around 9pm. The Toyota Landcruiser, which was being driven by one Bismark Fianyo crashed into the taxi at the SNNIT intersection when the taxi was also moving from Koforidua to Nyamekrom. The regional MTTU commander, Superintendent James Sarfo Peprah, expressed concern over the way drivers had been over-speeding on the Kassardjan by-pass, stressing that the speed limit should be 50km/h because the road was within Koforidua township. According to Supt Sarfo Peprah, in less than a year that the road was constructed, 13 people had lost their lives on the road due to over-speeding. We have been checking over-speeding and careless driving on that stretch of road, yet when the drivers realise the police are not there, they over-speed.
