Volta Lake Disaster: 35 Feared Drowned

35 people, mainly traders have been confirmed dead by officials in the Biakoye district in the Volta region after their boat capsized on the Volta Lake. The boat was said to be carrying over 70 people, travelling from Kete-Krachi to Ekpedzi when it overturned on the Volta Lake capsized at a village called Kpevi, near Krachi, on Tuesday September 6. District officials say efforts are still ongoing to rescue any other survivors after only 20 of the passengers were rescued. Some of the victims are believed to be trapped under the vessel. Confirming the incident to Citi News the District Chief Executive of Biakoye, Nana Akata Louise, said the actual figures of people dead may rise after the marine patrol completes its rescue mission. He said the boat loaded around 11:30 am Tuesday, adding that around 6pm, he had information that the boat had capsized. Lumovi Kojo, an eyewitness told Accra based Asempa FM that his sister and her children as well as his nephew may have died in the accident. He said the residents in the village came to the rescue of the victims but managed to rescue only 20 passengers.
