NUGS Conflict: President-Elect Threatens Court Action

The president-elect of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Osman Ayariga has hinted initiating legal processes to put a perpetual end to the current wrangling within the Union. A separate group of students led by former NUGS president, Anthony Abotsi is claiming legitimacy to the leadership of the Union and thus, went forward to elect new executives for the Students Union. According to them, the incumbents position has never existed in the union because he was imposed on the student body. In an interview with Citi News, the supposed new President of the union, Peter Kwasi Kodjie has said that the media played a big role in propping up Hamza Suhini as he had never been the legitimated president of NUGS. Prominence has been given Hamza because the media granted him a lot more hearing, the people cannot identify who the president of NUGS really is. Per our constitution and what it dictates, we recognized Anthony Abotsi Afriyie as our president and not Hamza. The group has described as illegal, the election of Osman Ayariga as president of NUGS, that took place at a congress which was chaired by the outgoing president of the Union, Hamza Suhini. Suhini countered this allegation by describing his accusers as a group of unscrupulous individuals who were parading themselves as executives of the union. He said that Abotsi Afriyie, on all levels, was unqualified to contest for any students position. The person they are claiming to be president is a character who could not obtain a grade point average of 3. 0 and for that matter was disqualified for contesting for an SRC position. So technically, such a person cannot contest for any position in the National Union of Ghana Students. "These are the procedures of NUGS; I am sure that students are discerning and that if a character is imposed on them, they will have the impetus to demonstrate clearly. Anthony Abotsi was removed from office as president after he was impeached by his colleague executives. He has protested that action, a move that appears to have divided the front of the Union. Shortly after being declared president-elect of the NUGS at a congress that was graced by two ministers of state, Osman Ayariga told Citi News that he will work hard to resolve the current divisions. What was organized by Anthony Abotsi Afriyie, if I am to speak on authority, was illegal but while some students went astray and did this, we will try to bring everyone on board and try to explain certain things to them; to make them see that what they did was wrong. "If all that fails, then we will have to go by the congress resolution and take legal action He urged students to project themselves in a civil and intellectual manner.
