Ministry For Ghana Police Affairs Needed

The Board of Directors of the Network of Associations of Registered NGOs in Ghana and the Management of Strategic Consortium are making a passionate appeal to His Excellency John Evans Atta Mills, President of the Republic of Ghana to consider as a matter of importance to establish a Ministry of Police Affairs. We also wish to extend our humble appeal to Honorable members of Parliament to support the idea of creating a Ministry of Police Affairs. The Board of Directors of the Network of Associations of Registered NGOs in Ghana and the Management of Strategic Consortium are of the view that, the creation of the Ministry of Police Affairs would send a signal to local and foreign investors that Government and the nation do put value and premium on security issues and this will boost the confidence of local and foreign investors as well as business executives. It saddens our hearts to see retired police officers in a rather devastating and deplorable state and we believe this could and should be reversed to attract world class professionals and academia into the Police Service. We are of the view that the Ministry would deal properly with the police personnels retirement issues, welfare and motivation. The Ghana Police Service (GPS) under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Interior finds it difficult to obtain the needed attention and the support it deserved. The Ministry of Interior is already inundated with many challenges because it had to cater for loads of services such as the Fire Service, Prisons, National Security and Immigration, among others and therefore finds it very difficult to deal efficiently and effectively with normal policing. We are therefore calling on civil society, religious groups, business community, Members of Parliament, the Diplomatic community and all and sundry to join us to champion this cause and get Government to establish the Ministry of Police Affairs. We will lead the campaign to mobilize the needed support and resources for the Ministry of Police Affairs and the Ghana Police Service. This will enable the Police to deliver quality service since modern policing is a shared responsibility.
