Every now and then we hear people especially the elderly make comments such as �You are the future leaders.� Let us pause for a minute and ask ourselves some questions; Are we indeed the future leaders? How are the elderly preparing us to become the future leaders they claim we are? How are we preparing ourselves to become the future leaders? As a young boy growing up, I look up to the elderly for guidance and correction regarding how I go about my activities in life. But sometimes I wonder if I should really look up to them. In our society today, we see and hear all sorts of vices being portrayed by the elderly be it in the open or in the dark. Cases of corruption in our civil service, schools, workplaces and government spring up everyday. People in government want to be the richest in the society. They live in beautiful and expensive houses and ride the latest cars. I am not against this way of life but I wonder whether these individuals have the interest of the citizenry at heart. You see them living a very comfortable life and those they claim to serve live in abject misery. That is not to say all those who are in government behave this way; there are a few who strive for the good of the citizenry but what use is a teardrop in the midst of oceans? When you come to our institutions of higher learning today, what you see is nothing to write home about. Student leaders who are supposed to serve the interests of their fellow students tend to put that aside and concentrate on amassing wealth for themselves. During election periods, you see students aspiring to hold leadership roles go every length to achieve their goal. You see students spending huge sums of money on souvenirs, banners, posters etc. during the campaign period. Is it out of place if they tend to recoup the money they spent during the campaign when they are elected and hold executive positions in our institutions? Aren�t we those who put them in those positions based on the �flashy� campaigns they staged and the souvenirs they gave us? Do we have a cause to chastise them for not attending to our needs? Close your eyes for a minute and imagine how Ghana would be if we the so called �future leaders� decide to take bold steps in carving a better future for ourselves and not letting the evil that surrounds us in this generation to corrupt our minds. Oh what a sight to behold! As young people growing up, do we make choices based on what we see around us or stay true to our values and principles we hold in high esteem? This generation can do what it can for us by directing us to the right path or misleading us. The choice lies in our hands. ARISE GHANA YOUTH FOR YOUR COUNTRY THE NATION DEMANDS YOUR DEVOTION LET US ALL UNITE TO UPHOLD HER AND MAKE HER GREAT AND STRONG WE ARE INVOLVED IN BUILDING OUR MOTHERLAND.
