Policemen Face Investigation For Insulting Kobby Acheampong

The Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Bureau (PIPS) is investigating eight Policemen for an alleged act of misconduct against Mr Kobby Acheampong, Deputy Minister of the Interior. A statement issued by the Police Public Directorate in Accra on Monday said the Police Officers on a motor check duty at Ekumfi Esaafa on the Cape Coast - Winneba Highway were alleged to have verbally abused Mr Acheampong for "daring" to offer them a piece of advice, as the Sector Deputy Minister, on the duties they were performing. It must be emphasised that, as a Sector Deputy Minister, Mr. Acheampong has every right to advise the police officers about the danger that their action posed to the public, it added. The statement said preliminary investigation had revealed that Mr Acheampong had driven out of a traffic which had dangerously mounted right on the crest of the hill down into the valley, in order to offer the officers a piece of advice about the unsuitability of conducting the motor check in the area, which was too obscured, and could therefore result in a road crash. Having made this observation, and advised that the exercise be conducted in a long stretch to make for easy visibility, one of the officers verbally attacked him, an act which is unbecoming of a Police Officer, it said. A Section of the Police Service Regulations clearly states that" lack of civility to any member of the public" by any Police Officer is misconduct. As part of the Image Cleansing Campaign the Police Administration has continuously called on the public to report any Police officer who misconducts him or herself to the PIPS for the necessary action, the statement said.
