Tamale Doctors Finally Join GMA Strike

The doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital have now thrown their weight behind the nationwide strike action announced by the leadership of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA). The Tamale doctors were earlier reported to have broken ranks with their mother association and were going about their normal duties to save lives. But after a meeting of the doctors last night, they have come out to deny the reports and pledged their support for the ongoing nationwide strike. In a statement read on behalf of the doctors, Dr. Opoku Boateng stated, We are attending to only critically ill patients and patients admitted before the strike, just as our colleagues in Korle-Bu and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospitals are doing. We are in full support of the purpose of the strike action and intend to fully comply with the directive of our national executives. The leadership of the GMA has also downplayed reports that its front is divided because some doctors are attending to patients, despite the associations nationwide strike. The doctors declared the strike to force the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to address certain grievances they had over their intended migration onto the Single Spine Salary Structure. The association has been criticised for the strike while some of its leaders have been accused of misleading their association. Dr. Frank Serebour of the GMA insisted the association is justified for embarking on the strike. We are achieving exactly what we set out to, he said. Now if you hear what Fair Wages and Salaries are saying that they are trying to engage us in a meeting on Thursday, it shows that we have at least been granted a listening ear and hopefully we can get this issue resolved.
