KATH Rejects Critically Injured Accident Victim

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has rejected a critically injured motor bike accident victim who was referred there by authorities of the Government Hospital at Wa. KATH is one of the hospitals where the doctors have refused to admit new patients because of the strike action announced by the Ghana Medical Association. The patient whose name was not disclosed is said to be in very critical condition and urgently needed the attention of doctors to save his life. The relatives of the patient who chartered a private ambulance to transport him to KATH were gravely disappointment when the hospital turned its back on them because of the strike action by the doctors at the hospital and thus leaving them with no option than to return to Wa. A medical doctor at the Wa Government Hospital who spoke to the GNA, said the situation had further aggravated the patients condition and he faced the possibility of loosing his life if not given prompt attention. He said efforts were being put in place by the patients relatives with assistance from the Wa Hospital to refer the patient to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra. The regional hospital in Wa has only four doctors and at the time GNA visited the hospital they were present but not working. Because of the perennial lack of doctors in the Wa hospital, the consulting rooms for out-patients are being manned by Medical Assistants and Senior Nurses. Currently nurses in the hospital are being forced to work extra hours because of the nationwide strike embarked by the nursing auxiliaries to back their demands for better allowances/salaries.
