Accounting Officer Defiles An Imbecile

A 32-year-old accounting officer, Dominic Baba was on Monday remanded into police custody by a circuit court in Accra for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old imbecile. Baba, charged with carnal knowledge, pleaded not guilty and he would re-appear at court on October 25. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sarah Acquah told the court presided over by Mrs Georgina Mensah-Datsa that the victim, who was mentally incapacitated, stayed with her mother at Madina, a suburb in Accra. The accused was an accounting officer, working with the Institute of Local Government Studies. The court heard that on October 2, this year, when the victim and her mother were returning from a Christian fellowship they met the accused and he lured the victim to buy her popcorn. ASP Acquah said that soon after buying the victim the popcorn, the accused lured her to his house at Adenta Redco flats and defiled her. Prosecution said that the victims mother became suspicious and called the accused person demanding the whereabouts of her daughter. ASP Acquah said the victim later returned to the house and confided in her mother that she was defiled by the accused. The victims uncle reported the case to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) at Madina and the accused was picked up by the police. In another development, the court remanded a 20-year-old unemployed into police custody for allegedly abducting a 15-year-old spinster and defiling her. Bashiru Bawa Abass, who has denied the charges, would re-appear at court on October 25. Defence counsel for Abass Mr Joseph Turkson, claimed that the victim was 18-years-old and not 15 years as alleged by the prosecution. According to Mr Turkson, the victims mother was aware of the relationship between the accused and the spinster and that because she was against it; she (victims mother) lodged a complaint with the police. Mr Turkson alleged that the victims mother was claiming GH 2,000 cedis before she could drop the case against the accused. The court has ordered prosecution to produce the weighing card of the victim to ascertain her actual age. ASP Acquah told the court that on September 30, this year, the victim left home and went to stay with Abass for two weeks without her mother's consent. The prosecution told the court that the victims mother searched for her (victim) but to no avail and on October 11, this year, victim's mother reported the case to the Kaneshie branch of DOVVSU. ASP Acquah said a medical form was issued to the victim for examination and after investigations, the accussed was charged.
