A founding member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has stated that the economy of Ghana cannot cater for houses for ex-presidents hence his support for the scrapping of the current arrangements where government is required to house former presidents. The NPP bigwig clashed with his party�s Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Professor Mike Ocquaye, who is advocating for the provision of accommodation for former presidents. Prof. Ocquaye was reacting to proposals made by Ghana President John Evans Atta Mills for the scrapping of current arrangements where government is mandated to house former heads of state. �These individuals have got property, they have to be sincere to this nation for ones,� the NPP firebrand told Citi Eyewitness News. "They can�t say that they are homeless people, they are not, so they should not tell us that. � President Mills is suggesting that rent allowances be paid to former presidents to cater for their accommodation, beginning from the end of his tenure rather than building plush mansions for them. But Ghana�s former Ambassador to Serbia, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe, said the country�s economy cannot sustain the current arrangement. �I disagree entirely with that 20 per cent suggestion brought by Atta Mills, I disagree entirely,� he added. �We have young people who are struggling to make ends meet in this society, some of them struggle to get even a wooden house, why should a president who has been on salary with a lot of �pegs�, when I say pegs there are a lot of things that we do not consider - fuel etc, these are very heavy amounts of monies. �And then when he finishes, he is given such a building, for what, I don�t understand it.
